On Beauty

Date

Fall 2023

Material

canvas, acrylic wash, paper, cotton thread, wooden dowel

This tapestry was based on a small project surrounding the topic of beauty, and what the purpose of beauty is in society. Based on two books, Makoto Fujimura's "Art and Faith: A Theology of Making" and Elaine Scarry's "On Beauty and Being Just", I interviewed 5 women on this topic. This artwork was created in response to their replies, and the general sense I got of the greatest beauty being found in community, and the undercurrent of wanting to making things beautiful that is found in most of humanity. The patchwork quilt, a utilitarian object, exemplifies this longing for beauty well.
